Vaginal Birth After Cesarean

We encourage mothers to be fully informed about the risks and benefits of all choices in health care.  For more information about VBAC, we recommend these resources:

Vaginal Birth and Cesarean Birth:  How do the Risks Compare?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have release their 2017 VBAC/LAC Practice Bulletin to the public. That document can be viewed here. The 2020 ACOG Practice Bulletin was not available to the public at the last update of this page.

In our area women who would like to have a VBAC have several choices. Both home and hospital births are an option for most women. Placement on this list is not a recommendation and we cannot promise that services will be available for all women. We will do our best to keep this list updated.

International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN)
The ICAN web page is a lovely resource for families recovering after cesarean birth, planning a cesarean, and planning a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). ICAN keeps their information current, and directories of VBAC-friendly providers and research are readily available.
ICAN of the Delta Valley serves Brentwood, Tracy, Modesto, and surrounding areas. For more information, contact Teri Nava-Anderson, chapter leader.

Home Birth
Big Valley Midwives regularly attends VBACs at home.

Doulas
Hiring a doula for your planned hospital VBAC is very likely to increase your chances of a healthy, safe birth experience. In general, having a doula present for your labor and birth can reduce your likelihood of an unplanned cesarean. For more information, click here.

Please check DoulaMatch to find the active doulas for your area.

VBAC-Friendly Options- Several hospitals in our area meet ACOG criteria for labor after cesarean.
If you are interested in labor after cesarean in a hospital setting, confirm that VBAC will be supported before choosing a potential provider or new provider.
